Putting shipping and tax rates upfront

We all support providing the customer as much information as needed to make an informed decision about purchasing a particular wine or number of wines online.  This includes a full description and the wine and its technical numbers.  Winemaker notes, awards, recipes etc. also add to the consumer's knowledge base.

Chief among the data, of course, is cost and not just cost of the wine, but shipping, handling and sales tax if applicable.  Oddly, too many shopping carts fail to insert these auxilliary costs until the buyer has filled in the bill to/ship to information.

One of the best examples of giving the consumer shipping and taxing numbers upfront is the Vin l 65 eCommerce platform.  Have a look at one of their most recent sites, Burgundy and Beyond , for a demo.

Another website developer, Sonoma Creative, located in Healdsburg, employing the Open-Source Magento eCommerce software, also does it right as you can observe on one of their newer sites for the client Wines and Makers .  Notice, too, that each page describing a particular wine has that wine's name in the URL, enhancing the search process.

    Tom,

Thanks for the link to our website to the recent site we built.

Right now we optionally show the taxes/shipping, etc right in the cart (the user has the option to pick a shipping state to see this information).

Peter in our office has really been studying usability, conversion rates, etc, and we can definately say that you have a higher conversion rate by showing this information upfront.

We are in the mist of tweaking some of this information and we are constantly trying out new ideas.

That Sonoma Creative website also looks good....

Another issue that I have come across is shipping wine to certain states. It seems to be getting better in this area, but in the past I have had difficulty shipping wine from California to Arizona. This information is also helpful as up-front data.
